Barter Economies and Centralized Merchants

چکیده

This essay analyzes the circumstances under which a barter system based on merchants and centralized markets dominates an unstructured primitive barter system. For that purpose, we set up a spatial general equilibrium model where exchange is costly. In an unstructured barter system, as population increases, the transaction costs may become cumbersome and the cost of trade expansion surpasses its benefits. This imposes limitations on the scope of the economy and the production level. To overcome these limitations, rational individuals can develop a more advanced barter system based on centralized merchants. This may explains why some economies, like the ancient Egypt and the Incas in Peru, did not evolve to a monetary system, and kept barter as their main exchange system. JEL: E0, R10, R11

Disorganization and Financial Collapse

Recently, Blanchard and Kremer (BK) argued that disorganization has led to the output decline in the former Soviet Union. In this paper we introduce liquidity and credit constraints into the BK model and show how these problems can alleviate the hold-up problem. We argue further that barter creates a hostage which allows to deal with disorganization when credit enforcement is prohibitively cost...

P2P Economies

We analyze current P2P credit systems in the light of modern economic theories, devoting particular attention to currency based ones, and argue their unsuitability to the characteristics of P2P networks. We then propose a robust, efficiently scalable barter system with short transactions and wealth storage, classically considered the two most important features of currency based economies.

Money, barter, and inflation in Russia

This paper analyzes relationships among money, barter, and inflation in Russia during the transition period. Following the development of a theoretical framework that introduces barter into a standard macroeconomic model for a small, open economy, we estimate the model using structural cointegration and vector error-correction methods. Our findings suggest that Russian barter resulted partly fr...

Chimpanzee Autarky

BACKGROUND Economists believe that barter is the ultimate cause of social wealth--and even much of our human culture--yet little is known about the evolution and development of such behavior. It is useful to examine the circumstances under which other species will or will not barter to more fully understand the phenomenon. Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) are an interesting test case as they are a...

Contrary to what is commonly believed they are not negligible in Central and Eastern Eu...
